Is it safe to upload your face to an AI skin app?

A photograph of your face is biometric data in much of the world, so the question is fair. What matters is three things: whether the app trains on your photo, how long it keeps it, and whether you can delete it yourself without asking permission.

What you are handing over

A face photograph is not an ordinary image. Under India's DPDP Act and the GDPR it is sensitive personal data, and in several jurisdictions the measurements derived from it count as biometric data. That raises the standard an app should be held to, whatever it costs.

The three questions worth asking

Ask whether your photo is used to train the model, how long it is kept, and whether you can delete it yourself. An app that answers all three plainly in its privacy policy is being straight with you. One that buries the answers, or has no policy, has told you something as well.

  • Is my photograph used to train the model, and is that opt-in or opt-out?
  • How long is it kept, and what happens when I stop using the app?
  • Can I delete everything myself, or do I have to email someone and wait?

How Saundarya AI answers them

Your photograph is analysed to produce your report and is not used to train our models unless you separately opt in, which is off by default. Photographs are kept while your account is open so you can reopen past reports, and are deleted with the account.

Used for training?
No, unless you turn it on. Off by default, and refusing it does not reduce what the app does
How long kept?
While your account is open, so past reports stay readable. Deleted with the account
Can you delete it?
Yes, from inside the app, at any time, without contacting anyone

The full detail, including what we cannot delete and why, is in the privacy policy rather than summarised away here.

Sensible habits whichever app you use

Read the policy before the first scan rather than after. Prefer apps that let you delete an account without an email exchange. Keep face photographs out of apps that have no policy at all, and remember that a free app with no stated business model is funded by something.

Get a routine for your own skin

Saundarya AI is an AI skin analysis and grooming app that reads a single selfie and returns a personalised report: face shape, skin type, detected skin concerns with the visual evidence behind them, a morning and night skincare routine, product picks at three budgets, and an 8-week improvement plan.

Generic advice is a starting point. A scan reads your skin, without your photo training anything on your own face, shows the visual evidence and a confidence score, and builds a morning and night routine around it. The first full analysis is free.

This is general cosmetic guidance, not medical advice. See a dermatologist for skin that is painful, spreading, scarring or not improving after 8-12 weeks.
